Cleansing an existing Mailchimp system
If you want to ensure your emails have the best chance of being delivered and you’re not paying more than you need to on Mailchimp, then you need to keep your audience clean.
Chimp Answers have helped many business owners clean up their database through effective re-engagement activity, saving them money and improving the chances that their emails will get into the inbox.
Three things to know…
If you’re considering getting Chimp Answers to clean your database, here are answers to the top 3 questions we get asked about this service, to help you understand how it can help your business.
Can't I do it myself?
Depending on the size of your audience, you can go through a cleansing process yourself, but there are “traps” you can fall into if you’re not careful and the bigger the audience the bigger the traps – we avoid the traps and manage the process for you
Why should I clean my Mailchimp Audience?
A key part of deliverability is how engaged people are to the emails you send. If you’ve lots of email recipients that aren’t opening, this is a signal that you’re not a good “emailer” and so your chances of hitting the inbox reduce – so you need to keep your list clean
Who should I clean from my Audience?
We work with you to identify the characteristics of those who are likely disengaged. There is no set formula because every business and email list is different. Once we know who is a “zombie” and who isn’t, we can start targeting them with specific activity
Email marketing only works when you know that your email has a chance of being read – in other words, it needs to be actually delivered to someone’s inbox. If it doesn’t get there, what was the point of sending it in the first place.
One of the key factors affecting ‘deliverability’ is the relationship existing subscribers have with your emails. If they’re not opening them regularly, then this is a sign to the inbox providers that your emails aren’t very good – and makes it less likely they’ll hit the inbox. If you have too many “Zombies”, people who are on your list but aren’t opening any emails, this can have a big impact on your deliverability, plus they’re people who you are paying for in Mailchimp, but who aren’t actually reading your emails.
Cleaning your list is one of the best ways of avoiding paying too much and ensures that the emails you send have the best chance of hitting the inbox.
Chimp Answers has helped multiple businesses identify their Zombies and then develop campaigns to “kill or cure”, so those who aren’t interested get removed, and those who are re-engaged – and because we’ve done it lots of times, we understand the pitfalls and challenges of the process, protecting you and your most valuable business asset – your database.
If your list has a rampant Zombie problem, then why not drop us a line or book a call and see how we can help clean it up, save you money and increase the chances of your email hitting the inbox.
Where it is natural that any delegate to a Mailchimp course wants to be able to send an email, Robin's approach is far more strategic and really challenges you to think about the best approach to manage your email list, how data reaches your mailchimp list, and then moves forward as to what emails are to be sent to this list and then how to craft that mail. Such an approach goes well beyond expectations.

Your name matters, especially when it comes to emails. Email is sent from an individual to an individual and for most small businesses your email needs to come from a named person in the business and not “sales” or “info”. Why? Let me explain…
To understand what to do, (if anything) you need to get a handle on what these terms mean to you and Mailchimp. Once you know this, it’s a lot easier to handle.
When an email is received, the first thing anyone does is look at who it’s from and connects this with previous knowledge or expectations associated with that name.
Why Choose Chimp Answers?
There are lots of reasons why Chimp Answers are the best people to speak to if you want to really solve your Mailchimp problems, but here are the top three that we hear about from our loved clients:
We’re Approved Mailchimp Pro Partners, so you can be assured we know our stuff
This is not about vanity, this is about results. Our projects deliver every time
We’ve glowing reviews and feedback from all of our clients on their experience.
How it works
When you contact us to discuss your Zombie problem and we take comprehensive notes and ask lots of questions to make sure that we understand your specific requirements, your existing business and the relationship you have with your database.
We’ll then come back to you with a specific proposal on how to move forward, along with some initial costs and then, subject to approval we go through a clear process to help tidy up and clean your database:
The first step is to complete a full audit of your Mailchimp account. We call this a Mailchimp Medical and it gives us the details of everything that’s going on, both in terms of stuff you know, but also stuff you maybe didn’t know. Before we can start any rebuild, we need to know what exactly the existing state of the account is – that way we can keep what works and change what doesn’t.
The next step is to review the medical results and then sit and plan the project out in detail. This usually includes a 90 minute Email Systems Planning (ESP) Meeting, where we combine our knowledge of Mailchimp & Marketing with your knowledge of your business to sketch out the specifics.
From this initial discussion and sketch we create a detailed implementation plan and fire it over to you for review. This will be fully costed up, and if you decide you want to proceed with doing the project yourself, or have other resource available, this plan can be implemented with our involvement.
Most of our clients are however, happy for us to proceed, so we can then dive into the project and make it happen. We will still come back to you for content/images to populate the system, but we’ll do all the heavy lifting – and once done, guide you through the system in a comprehensive wrap up meeting.
Pricing & Timing Guidelines
To give you a guide for the potential timings and costs involved in an audience cleansing project, it usually takes a couple of weeks to plan and set up and then the actual list cleansing takes place over a 4-5 week period. We then review and discuss the results and any next steps.
A ‘typical’ audience cleansing activity, depending on the size and complexity of the account will cost between $350 (£275) and $650 (£500) to complete. Of course, this will be fully costed out before we start so you’ll be clear up front what the actual cost will be.

Robin’s ability to combine the broad strategic thinking with hands on implementation skills is a perfect combination.
